If you want to refresh some classics that you may have missed you should start with The Last Unicorn Peter Beagle. This book should be read several times by every fantasy reader. It is a food the basis of gender. After that, you might consider Tolkien's The Hobbit. If you are looking for a new classic you may want to throw added to The Children of Hurin is a book that was started by Tolkien and finished by his son.
